Havens Winery was founded in 1984, capitalizing on the richly diversified Napa Valley microclimates, and utilizing traditional methods, to produce Merlot, Syrah, and Bourriquot, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend modeled after Chateau Cheval Blanc. This put Havens on track to become one of the top wineries in Napa. Smith-Anderson Wine Group, with 40 years of experience producing quality wines, acquired Havens in 2010, introducing Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to the repertoire. The classical label remains the same, as does the exceptional quality of these wines.
Vineyards traverse the Napa Valley, from Carneros to Howell Mountain, utilizing exceptional grapes from illustrious vineyards, such as Stagecoach Vineyard. The current Havens focus is creating exquisite red blends possessing elegant characteristics, balanced flavors and smooth, satisfying finishes on the palate. These wines are currently available in the Smith-Anderson Tasting Room, along with other brands and varietals from the top wineries in Napa.

Meet the winemaker
Mike Blom
Winemaker
With over 42 years of experience in the wine industry, Mike Blom has built an impressive career marked by a deep understanding of winemaking, vineyard management, and operations. A graduate of UC Davis, Mike earned his degree in Biochemistry, laying the foundation for his future in the wine industry.
Mike began his career working in a winery laboratory, where he honed his skills in viticulture and winemaking science. Throughout his career, he has held key positions with notable wineries, including Grgich Hills, Peju Province, and MadoroM Vineyards, where he was responsible for ensuring the highest quality standards in wine production.
His leadership extends beyond winemaking. Mike has successfully overseen vineyard operations and winery management roles at esteemed companies such as Firestone Vineyards, 509 Wines, and Golden State Vintners. These positions have allowed him to cultivate expertise in every aspect of the wine business.
In addition to his extensive hands-on experience, Mike was the founder and owner of Napa Barrel Care, a highly regarded outsourcing bonded winery barrel warehouse. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to merge this business with Top It Off Bottling, a renowned mobile and in-house bottling company. As a partner, Mike further expanded his expertise in bottling and distribution, enhancing his multifaceted knowledge of the wine industry.
A Storied Legacy in Napa Valley
Founded in 1984 by Mike Havens, his Yountville winery was established with a vision to produce world-class wines with a focus on varietals often found in Bordeaux and Northern Rhone. In order to accomplish this goal, he sought out the relatively cooler climate of Carneros where he decided to plant his first vineyards of Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc.
Havens was also the first winery to grow and produce Albarino in the U.S, having sourced vine cuttings directly from Spain, while also selecting Carneros as the prime growing region for these grapes. Additionally, Mike created a proprietary blend called Bourriquot, a unique combination of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, which was inspired by one of his favorite wineries, Cheval Blanc.
Havens achieved quite good acclaim from both critics and wine connoisseurs alike but, like many small wineries, succumbed to financial pressures and was eventually forced to sell to a larger wine company to remain viable. Unfortunately, this company also had their own business issues and subsequently entered into bankruptcy a few years later.
Resurrection and Reimagination
In 2010, Havens Winery was acquired by the Smith-Anderson Wine Group, which valued the potential of the brand and desired to continue the winery legacy. Under new ownership, the winery has expanded their vision by adding more varietals, such as Chardonnay and Napa sub-AVA Cabernets, and expanding their offerings to other California appellations.
Havens Winery is now planning to revive the Bourriquot brand and explore re-sourcing rare Albarino grapes from Napa, offering exclusive new additions to their portfolio.
